Nightroot Shade is a dark, muted purple Warpaints Fanatic Wash from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. wash originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 3 and is designed to give pale flesh, pink and purple fabrics, monsters, magical details and other miniature surfaces deep, cool shadows with a mysterious colour cast.
What is Nightroot Shade? It is not a conventional opaque acrylic paint, but a water-based acrylic wash for shading and colour toning. The colour is a dark, desaturated purple that is considerably more restrained than a bright violet wash. This creates a smoky, nocturnal shadow that fits naturally into the cold, spectral and unsettling atmosphere of John Blanche Masterclass Volume 3.
Warpaints Fanatic Washes have specialised flow properties that help the wash collect around details and inside recesses. Folds, muscles, panel lines, scales and other sculpted textures therefore become easier to read with relatively little brushwork. Nightroot Shade does more than simply darken these areas: it also gives the shadows a purple colour. This is useful whenever black or brown would feel too neutral, harsh or earthy.
How do you use Nightroot Shade? Shake the bottle thoroughly and apply the wash with a brush over a completely dry base colour. Allow the fluid to flow towards recesses while watching broad, flat areas for excessive pooling. Surplus wash can be removed with a clean brush while it is still wet. Let the layer dry completely before restoring the original base colour across raised surfaces and adding lighter highlights.
Nightroot Shade is particularly useful for pale flesh. Apply it selectively around eye sockets, beneath cheekbones, between fingers, around muscles and inside other recessed areas of the face or body. The muted purple gives pale skin a colder, tired or supernatural appearance. This works particularly well for undead, cultists, vampires, witches and other grimdark characters. On ordinary human flesh, a more selective application prevents the complete face from becoming excessively violet.
Across pink, red and purple fabrics, Nightroot Shade quickly introduces additional depth. Guide the wash into the deepest folds of cloaks, robes, ribbons and banners while keeping raised areas comparatively clean. Once dry, reapply the original colour to the upper folds and finish with a lighter highlight. The base colour remains recognisable while the recessed areas gain a darker, atmospheric purple shadow.
Nightroot Shade also works well across monsters and organic details. Tentacles, wings, scales, chitin, scars and unusual skin textures can all benefit from its coloured shading. Over pink, blue, grey or pale green, the wash deepens recesses while simultaneously introducing an unnatural discolouration. Keeping the application localised also creates useful colour variation without requiring an entirely new basecoat.
For magic, runes and energy effects, Nightroot Shade can establish the dark outer stage of a purple or blue lighting scheme. Place it inside recesses around runes, between crystal facets or along the darker edge of a supernatural glow. Progress towards the centre with lighter violet, pink, blue or near-white colours. The deep purple surrounding these brighter stages helps the strongest highlights appear more luminous by comparison.
Nightroot Shade also has practical applications across terrain. A controlled layer inside cracks in stone, around ornamentation, between skulls or across gothic architecture can introduce a subtle violet shadow. On spectral ruins, gravestones and fantasy interiors, this can create more atmosphere than a completely neutral black wash. Combine the purple with cool greys, blue-greens and pale accents for a coherent cold palette.
Warpaints Fanatic Washes can be mixed with one another, so Nightroot Shade can also be adjusted to suit a particular project. Mixing a small amount with another wash can create a less distinctly purple shadow. For experienced painters, this provides useful control over shadow temperature and colour variation. Controlled layers are generally preferable to one heavy pool, as they preserve more of the underlying paintwork.
Nightroot Shade is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners can quickly define sculpted details and folds, while experienced painters can use its purple tone selectively for flesh, atmospheric shadows and subtle colour variation. Its main advantage is that Nightroot Shade adds both shadow and colour at the same time, keeping dark areas cool, mysterious and visually rich rather than simply turning them black.
