Vineroot Shade is a dark red-brown Warpaints Fanatic Wash from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. wash originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4 and flows into recesses to give skin, leather, wood, earth, rust, clothing and terrain warm shadows, stronger contrast and a weathered grimdark character.
What is Vineroot Shade? It is a fluid acrylic wash with a deep red-brown character. A wash behaves differently from conventional opaque acrylic paint: the thin paint spreads across an existing base colour and accumulates more strongly around seams, folds and other recessed details. This strengthens the shadows while leaving much of the original colour visible.
Vineroot Shade originally appeared as one of the two washes in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4. The set contains eight Fanatic acrylic colours and two washes, with a focus on warm, earthy and intense tones. Vineroot Shade supports that palette with a dark, warm shadow colour that pairs naturally with flesh, reds, browns, ochres and weathered materials.
The main advantage of Vineroot Shade is the warm definition it adds to sculpted texture. A black wash can quickly make a surface feel cold or harsh, whereas Vineroot Shade gives the shadows a red-brown cast. This is particularly useful when you want more depth without removing the warmth from skin, leather, timber or earthy colours. It can be applied across an entire component or placed selectively into individual recesses.
How do you use Vineroot Shade? Shake the bottle thoroughly and apply the wash over completely dry paint. Use enough to let it flow easily, but avoid leaving large pools across flat surfaces. Guide the wash towards folds, seams and deep textures with your brush. If unwanted pooling develops, carefully remove the excess with a clean, slightly damp brush before it begins to dry.
For skin and organic details, the red-brown character is especially useful. Over warm flesh colours, Vineroot Shade can deepen shadows around muscles, fingers, faces and skin folds. Across pale flesh, a selective application around eyes, scars or irritated areas can produce a rawer appearance. Once dry, restore the original flesh colour on raised surfaces before adding progressively lighter highlights.
Vineroot Shade also works well across leather, straps and equipment. Apply it over medium brown, red-brown or tan base colours to define seams and sculpted relief. Restore the base colour across larger raised surfaces afterwards and add lighter wear along selected edges. This quickly creates a readable transition from deep red-brown shadows to worn leather without manually outlining every individual fold.
Across wood, roots and earth, Vineroot Shade helps connect natural textures. Let the wash settle into wooden grain, between areas of bark or around stones and roots on a base. Over khaki, ochre and lighter browns, it creates a warmer impression of damp or rich soil. Once dry, raised texture can be drybrushed or layered with the original base colour and progressively lighter earth tones.
The wash is also useful for rust and weathering. Applied over dark metal, brown or orange, Vineroot Shade can create deeper red-brown staining around rivets, seams, damage and armour-plate joints. Keep the application irregular rather than covering every area equally. Small orange or lighter rust accents can then be added to selected spots to increase both colour and texture variation.
Red clothing, banners and heraldry can benefit from this warm shading as well. Vineroot Shade deepens folds without immediately pushing the red towards black. Over subdued reds, terracotta and crimson base colours, it creates a rich shadow suited to weathered fantasy and grimdark miniatures. For stronger definition, restore the original red to raised areas after the wash has completely dried.
Across terrain, Vineroot Shade suits brickwork, soil, timber, rusty machinery, weathered plaster and ruins. The Fanatic Wash range is also fully mixable, allowing you to adjust the character of the shade. Combining a red-brown wash with a greener wash, for example, can create dirtier and more neutral variations for organic staining and heavily weathered surfaces.
Vineroot Shade is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners can quickly add depth to relief and texture, while experienced painters can use the wash selectively for recess shading, colour toning and weathering. Its main advantage is its warm red-brown character: where black can become harsh, Vineroot Shade creates earthy shadows that integrate naturally with organic materials and weathered grimdark miniatures.
