Pine Hollow Shade is a dark blue-green Warpaints Fanatic Wash from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. wash comes from John Blanche Masterclass Volume 3 and flows into recesses to give armour, clothing, flesh, monsters, vegetation and terrain quick cool shadows, stronger contrast and atmospheric colour toning.
What is Pine Hollow Shade? It is not a conventional opaque acrylic paint, but a fluid acrylic wash designed for shading and colour toning. Its dark green-blue colour has a cool, weathered character that fits the icy and spectral palette of Volume 3. Where a black wash creates neutral and sometimes harsh shadows, Pine Hollow Shade introduces darkness while retaining a distinctive blue-green colour.
Warpaints Fanatic Washes are water-based acrylic washes with specialised flow properties. They naturally settle around recesses and sculpted details, making shadows and surface definition easier to read. Fanatic Washes are also mixable with one another. Pine Hollow Shade can therefore be used directly for a pronounced cold shadow or combined with another wash when you want to adjust its colour and intensity for a particular miniature.
How do you use Pine Hollow Shade? Shake the bottle thoroughly and apply the wash with a brush over a completely dry base colour. Allow the fluid to collect around joints, folds, scales, rivets and other recessed details. Use a clean brush to remove excessive pooling before it dries, particularly across large flat surfaces. Once fully dry, reapply the original base colour or lighter highlights to raised areas where additional definition is required.
Across armour and equipment, Pine Hollow Shade works particularly well with green, teal, blue-grey and cool metallic surfaces. A controlled layer deepens the joints between armour plates and brings rivets and damage into clearer focus. For greater precision, place the wash only inside recesses rather than coating the complete surface. Edge highlights can then be restored to strengthen the contrast between deep shadows and worn raised areas.
On clothing, the wash works naturally over muted greens, blue-greens, greys and other cold colours. Guide Pine Hollow Shade into the deepest folds while avoiding excessive accumulation across broad flat areas. Once dry, restore the midtone on raised folds and introduce lighter highlights. This gives cloaks, uniforms, bags and hoods additional depth without requiring every individual shadow to be mixed and painted separately.
Pine Hollow Shade is also useful for pale flesh, monsters and undead creatures. Applied selectively over a pale skin colour, it can create an unhealthy cold cast around eye sockets, fingers, muscles and other recessed areas. On scales, tentacles and chitin, the wash increases definition as the darker pigment collects between sculpted details. For subtle flesh toning, localised application will usually give more control than covering the entire model with a heavy coat.
Across vegetation, Pine Hollow Shade can deepen leaves, moss, shrubs and unusual fantasy plants. It is particularly effective over grey-green and muted blue-green colours, where it creates the impression of damp, shadowed foliage. Once dry, restore the original green across raised areas and optionally drybrush with a lighter colour. The dark green-blue remains in the recesses while the texture becomes easier to read at tabletop distance.
For terrain and weathering, the wash suits stone, ruins, wood, statues and industrial details. Place Pine Hollow Shade around cracks, beneath ledges and in damp-looking areas to suggest cold staining and accumulated shadow. A small controlled amount over copper or bronze can also contribute to a blue-green weathered colour scheme. Used this way it remains a painting and toning technique rather than a dedicated textured patina effect product.
A practical advantage of Pine Hollow Shade is how naturally it complements subdued John Blanche colours. Over Bramble Grove, for example, it can strengthen cold green shadows, while across Dewpath it adds greater depth to a teal surface. It also contrasts effectively with rusty browns, ochres and other warm weathering colours. This temperature difference between cool blue-green shadows and warmer worn areas helps separate materials without relying on extremely bright colours.
Pine Hollow Shade is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners can quickly make sculpted detail and shadows more visible, while experienced painters can apply the wash selectively for recess shading, subtle staining and atmospheric weathering. Its main advantage is that shadows become more than simply darker: the blue-green tone simultaneously gives the surface a colder, damper and more characterful atmosphere.
