Warm Skin Shade is a warm brown Warpaints Fanatic Wash from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic wash flows into recesses to give skin, faces and other warm materials natural shadows, stronger contrast and clearer definition with minimal effort.
What is Warm Skin Shade? Rather than a conventional opaque acrylic paint, it is a water-based Fanatic Wash with specialised flow properties. The thin paint collects more strongly around folds, muscles, wrinkles and other recessed details while raised areas remain lighter. This allows you to add definition and a warmer colour tone to an existing basecoat in a single stage.
Warm Skin Shade originally appeared in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1 Paint Set, which included two washes. The colour was developed as part of The Army Painter's collaboration with John Blanche around expressive, gritty and gothic miniatures. Its warm, earthy shading character fits naturally into that approach, adding depth to skin and materials without immediately pushing the shadows towards harsh black.
Why use Warm Skin Shade on skin? A warm brown wash automatically emphasises many of the forms that make a face readable. More wash remains around the eyes, nose, mouth, fingers and between muscles than on raised areas. The Army Painter uses Warm Skin Shade in an official skin-tone workflow: the wash is applied over a warm skin base before the upper areas are highlighted again. This quickly establishes a clear relationship between shadow, midtone and highlight.
How do you use Warm Skin Shade? Apply your chosen base colour first and allow it to dry completely. Brush a controlled layer of wash over the surface and allow the fluid paint to move naturally towards the recesses. Use your brush to remove large pools from flatter areas or guide excess wash towards places where stronger shading is required. Allow the wash to dry fully before adding further highlights.
For faces and hands, the original skin colour can be reapplied after the wash has dried. Concentrate it on cheekbones, the nose, forehead, knuckles and other raised areas. A lighter skin colour or a small amount of Ivory White can then be introduced for selected highlights. This keeps the warmth of Warm Skin Shade in the recesses while restoring clarity and brightness to the face.
The wash is not limited to human skin. Warm Skin Shade works equally well on muscular barbarians, monsters and other organic surfaces where a warm brown shadow is desirable. Over a light basecoat, it can also add definition to fur, rope, bone, parchment and weathered fabrics. Testing a small area first is useful on these materials because a wash does more than darken recesses: it also subtly changes the overall colour tone.
Metallic surfaces can benefit from this warmth as well. A controlled layer over gold or bronze can make recesses appear warmer and more aged. In a grimdark workflow, brighter metallic highlights can then be restored along raised edges. The same approach works well on ornaments, buckles and weathered decoration where a perfectly clean metallic finish would look too new.
Warm Skin Shade is also 100% mixable with other Warpaints Fanatic Washes, allowing you to adjust the character of your shadows. Combining it with another brown or darker wash can produce deeper shading, while controlled application lets you preserve more subtle variations. This is particularly useful for experienced painters who want to introduce different colour temperatures into skin, leather and weathered surfaces.
The practical strength of a wash lies in its combination of speed and control. Beginners can reveal a large amount of sculpted detail with a single brush application instead of painting every shadow individually. Advanced painters can apply Warm Skin Shade selectively, build it through several controlled layers or combine it with conventional layering and glazing. The same bottle is therefore useful for quick tabletop miniatures and more detailed character painting.
Warm Skin Shade is therefore suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Its main advantage is the ability to add shadow, warmth and definition at the same time. This makes it especially effective for characterful faces and weathered grimdark miniatures, while its warm brown character remains surprisingly versatile on materials far beyond skin.
