Grimdark Shadow is a very dark, near-black Warpaints Fanatic Wash with a subtle green tone, developed as part of The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass. This 18ml. acrylic wash flows into recesses to give armour, metal, cloth, wood and terrain deep shadows, stronger contrast and a dirtier, weathered grimdark appearance.
What is Grimdark Shadow? Rather than an opaque black acrylic paint, it is a water-based Fanatic Wash with specialised flow properties. The wash collects around rivets, panel lines, folds, joints and other recessed details. This makes forms easier to read without requiring every individual shadow to be painted by hand. Its subtle green undertone also gives the shading more character than a completely neutral black wash.
Grimdark Shadow originally appeared in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1 Paint Set, where it was one of two included washes. The colour was developed within The Army Painter's collaboration with John Blanche for expressive, gritty and gothic miniatures. A near-black wash with a slight green character fits naturally into this visual language, creating atmospheric dark areas while allowing the colours underneath to continue influencing the final result.
Why use Grimdark Shadow? A conventional black wash can sometimes appear harsh or completely neutral. The subtle greenish quality of Grimdark Shadow makes deep shading more interesting and works particularly well alongside muted greens, browns, greys and weathered metallics. This means it can define individual details while also helping different materials feel more visually connected.
How do you use Grimdark Shadow? Apply your base colours first and allow them to dry completely. Shake the bottle thoroughly, then distribute a controlled amount of wash across the desired surface. Allow the fluid paint to move towards seams and recesses. Remove large pools from flat areas with a clean brush before they dry. Once the wash is completely dry, restore the original base colour or a lighter shade on raised surfaces.
Grimdark Shadow is particularly useful on armour and weapons. Over steel or silver, the wash collects around rivets, plates, joints and mechanical details, quickly giving metallic surfaces greater depth and an aged appearance. Reapply the original metallic colour to exposed edges and worn areas afterwards, then add a brighter silver to selected highlights if required. Brown rust and dust tones can be introduced locally for additional weathering.
The same approach works well on machinery, industrial terrain and science-fiction models. Apply Grimdark Shadow around vents, bolts, cables, panel lines and damaged surfaces. On wood, it can settle into grain and joints, while stone, rubble and ruins quickly gain stronger depth. The slight green component can subtly suggest age, dampness or accumulated grime without turning the entire surface obviously green.
On cloth and robes, Grimdark Shadow is useful when you want deep, cool and dirty-looking shadows. An all-over wash works quickly on muted colours, while selective application provides more control over lighter surfaces. Place the wash mainly between folds and around straps, then restore the original colour across raised areas. This keeps the miniature readable and prevents every colour from becoming equally dark.
Another useful grimdark technique is unifying different colours. A miniature containing several earthy, metallic and muted colours can sometimes feel visually fragmented. Applying Grimdark Shadow thinly or selectively across those areas can bring their shadows closer together. Once dry, reinforce the most important highlights. This creates a more coherent, atmospheric finish without completely covering the colours underneath.
Warpaints Fanatic Washes are designed for shading and colour toning, using their flow properties to target recessed details on models and miniatures. The washes are also fully mixable with one another. Grimdark Shadow can therefore be combined with other Fanatic Washes when you want to shift the result towards a warmer brown, a different colour tone or a less intense shadow.
Grimdark Shadow is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners can quickly reveal sculpted detail and create stronger contrast, while experienced painters can use it selectively for recess shading, atmospheric toning and layered weathering. Its main advantage is the combination of deep shading and subtle colour: dark enough for powerful definition, yet more characterful than a straightforward black wash.
