Shadow Thorn is a deep, muted blue from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 3 and is ideal for dark armour, clothing, cold shadows, night scenes, monsters and atmospheric grimdark miniatures without automatically relying on pure black.

What is Shadow Thorn? It is a dark, restrained blue with a smoky character, developed in collaboration with John Blanche. Visually, the colour sits between deep blue and blue-grey, making it a natural fit for the cold and mysterious atmosphere of Volume 3. Shadow Thorn is dark enough to function as a shadow colour while retaining considerably more colour information than black, keeping even deep areas visually interesting.

Shadow Thorn is a conventional Warpaints Fanatic acrylic paint, rather than a wash, Speedpaint, metallic or effect paint. The Fanatic formulation combines dense pigmentation with a premium resin base and stabilisers for strong coverage and smooth application. It can also be thinned considerably while maintaining good pigment dispersion. This allows Shadow Thorn to work both as an opaque colour and in controlled thin layers for glazing, blending and building shadows.

How do you use Shadow Thorn? Shake the bottle for approximately 30 seconds before applying the paint in thin layers. As a dark base colour, Shadow Thorn can be painted directly over a primed surface. For greater depth, keep the deepest recesses almost black and progress from Shadow Thorn towards lighter blues or blue-greys. Frostveil, for example, can provide a distinctly lighter blue stage when you want a pronounced cold transition.

For armour, Shadow Thorn creates a strong foundation for dark blue plates without making the miniature appear black. Keep joints, overlapping plates and damaged areas dark before applying a lighter blue to upward-facing surfaces. A fine edge highlight along sharp edges improves definition. Small additions of exposed metal, grime or rust can then turn the cool blue foundation into convincingly worn grimdark equipment.

On clothing, the colour works naturally across cloaks, uniforms, trousers, gloves and heavy robes. Use Shadow Thorn as the foundation and highlight it with a muted blue or blue-grey. For weathered fabric, apply highlights with stippling or short brush strokes rather than relying entirely on smooth transitions. This introduces visual texture and can help wool, canvas and rough clothing look more tactile.

Shadow Thorn is also particularly useful for cold shadows. Instead of darkening flesh, bone or grey surfaces exclusively with black, heavily thinned Shadow Thorn can introduce a local blue cast. Apply it carefully around eye sockets, beneath cheekbones, around hands or on surfaces facing away from the light. This approach is especially effective on pale, undead or supernatural figures where cool shadows can create an unsettling atmosphere.

Across monsters and creatures, Shadow Thorn can be used on scales, skin, wings, chitin and tentacles. Combining it with violet, green or pale colours changes how the blue is perceived. A progression from Shadow Thorn towards Iceborn, for example, produces an extremely cold, almost spectral result. Earthy or green accents can instead integrate the dark blue into a more natural creature palette.

The colour is equally useful for night scenes and object source lighting. Apply Shadow Thorn to surfaces outside the direct illumination before building the lit areas with progressively brighter colours. Around a torch, lantern or magical effect, its cool blue character creates a strong contrast with warm yellow, orange and red light. This helps the imaginary light source read clearly without reducing every surrounding shadow to featureless black.

For terrain, Shadow Thorn suits slate, cold rocks, weathered walls, roof tiles, dark ruins and nighttime bases. A deep blue foundation followed by blue-grey drybrushing can quickly establish a cold atmosphere on stone. Brown earth, rust and moss can then introduce natural variation and prevent larger scenery pieces from becoming visually uniform.
