Product description

Blood Thorn is an intense crimson-magenta from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4 and is ideal for clothing, flesh, scars, heraldry, daemonic details and other striking accents within warm, dark grimdark colour schemes.

What is Blood Thorn? Blood Thorn is a powerful colour positioned between deep red, crimson and magenta. It has noticeably more pink and purple intensity than a traditional blood red, allowing it to stand out among browns, ochres, dark metals and weathered earth colours. This makes Blood Thorn particularly effective as a focal colour: even a relatively small painted area can attract considerable visual attention.

Blood Thorn originally appeared as one of the eight acrylic colours in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4. This volume explores earthy warmth and fiery intensity, combining subdued natural tones with several highly saturated colours. Developed in collaboration with John Blanche, the palette connects naturally with the grimdark, gothic and narrative atmosphere associated with his influential work in miniature wargaming.

Blood Thorn is a conventional Warpaints Fanatic acrylic paint, rather than a wash, Speedpaint, metallic or effect paint. The Fanatic formulation is designed specifically for miniature painting, combining pigment with a premium resin base and stabilisers for smooth application. Blood Thorn can be built up in thin coats and diluted for techniques such as layering and glazing. Its intense crimson-magenta character appears especially vivid over a pale foundation.

How do you use Blood Thorn? Shake the bottle thoroughly and build the paint with thin layers. For a vivid finish, work over a pale, pink or red foundation. For a darker grimdark result, begin with burgundy, dark red-brown or subdued purple. Apply Blood Thorn across the midtones and raised surfaces before adding a lighter pink, peach or ivory to the sharpest highlights.

For clothing and heraldry, Blood Thorn provides a distinctive alternative to conventional red. Use it across cloaks, robes, tabards, ribbons, banners and shield designs. Dark burgundy, red-brown or purple works naturally inside the deepest folds, while Blood Thorn restores intensity across raised areas. Keeping the brightest highlights selective helps the result remain rich and sinister rather than turning the entire surface bright pink.

Blood Thorn is also useful for flesh, scars and organic details. The Army Painter has used the colour as a bright accent for scars and exposed, sinewy structures on a daemonic miniature. In practical painting, it suits irritated flesh, fresh scars, tentacles, tongues, membranes, muscles and other unnatural anatomical details. When thinned, Blood Thorn can also introduce controlled warmth or an unhealthy flush to areas of pale skin.

For monsters and daemons, combine Blood Thorn with subdued greens, browns and unhealthy flesh tones. The intense magenta-red then creates deliberate contrast against the dirtier surrounding colours. Bright spines, eyes, claw bases, wounds and magical markings are all useful applications. Restricting Blood Thorn to selected details creates a clear focal point while allowing the overall miniature to retain its grimdark character.

Blood Thorn also has plenty of potential for magic and supernatural effects. Begin with dark purple or crimson in the shadows, use Blood Thorn as the intense midtone and progress towards pink or near-white at the brightest energy points. This approach works for runes, crystals, magical flames, energy fields and glowing eyes. Against black, dark green or blue-green, its magenta character produces particularly strong colour contrast.

The colour can also be used more subtly for variation. Thin Blood Thorn and glaze small amounts over cheeks, noses, fingers, scars or organic surfaces. Several controlled layers provide more flexibility than one heavy application. For a weathered finish, the saturated colour can subsequently be interrupted with brown glazes, grime or dark chips to integrate it with surrounding materials.

Across terrain, Blood Thorn works well for banners, graffiti, unusual vegetation, flowers, daemonic growths, ritual markings and gothic details. Among stone, rust, dark wood and aged metal, a small crimson-magenta element can visually connect a scenic piece to a character or faction colour without dominating the entire setting.
