Product description

Hearthborn is a light, warm peach-beige Warpaints Fanatic acrylic from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. colour originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4 and is particularly useful for flesh, pale fabrics, worn leather, sandstone, bone-like details and warm highlights across earthy grimdark colour schemes.

What is Hearthborn? Hearthborn is a light flesh and sand tone with a warm yellow-peach undertone. Visually, it sits between beige, pale ochre and a warm skin colour. This makes it less cool than ivory and less saturated than a pronounced yellow or orange. Its gentle warmth is especially useful for natural materials and highlights that need to become brighter without immediately moving towards pure white.

Hearthborn originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4. This palette focuses on warm, earthy and fiery colours that create a strong contrast with the colder tones of Volume 3. Within a warm grimdark scheme, Hearthborn can act as a pale counterpart to browns, ochres, reds and olive greens. Developed as part of the collaboration between The Army Painter and John Blanche, it fits naturally into the distinctive grimdark and gothic atmosphere of the Masterclass series.

Hearthborn is a conventional Warpaints Fanatic acrylic paint, rather than a wash, Speedpaint, metallic or effect paint. The Fanatic formulation combines dense pigmentation with a premium resin base and stabilisers for smooth application. It can be thinned considerably while maintaining good pigment dispersion. This allows Hearthborn to work as an opaque colour as well as in thinner layers for layering, blending and glazing.

How do you use Hearthborn? Shake the bottle thoroughly and apply the paint in several thin layers. For flesh, begin with a darker warm flesh, brown or red-brown foundation. Build Hearthborn across the raised areas of the face and body, concentrating the lightest applications on cheekbones, the nose, chin, fingers and prominent muscles. For a paler final result, Hearthborn can then be mixed or combined with ivory or another light warm colour.

For human flesh, its warm peach-beige character makes Hearthborn useful as either a foundation or highlight depending on the skin tone you want to create. Warm browns and subdued reds can provide richer shadows. Thin red, purple or brown tones around cheeks, eye sockets and deeper areas introduce additional variation and prevent pale flesh from becoming one uniform beige surface.

Hearthborn also performs well across pale fabrics. Linen, canvas, shirts, cloaks, bandages, sacks and weathered uniform details are all suitable applications. Begin with darker beige, khaki or brown and place Hearthborn across the raised folds. Because it is warmer than white, the fabric remains connected to an earthy palette. A small amount of ivory on the sharpest folds can provide additional contrast where needed.

For leather, parchment and worn materials, Hearthborn can represent lighter areas of abrasion. Paint a medium or dark brown foundation first, then add thin lines or small marks of Hearthborn along edges, folds and damaged areas. This suggests material that has become paler through repeated wear. A thinned brown wash can subsequently soften any transitions that appear too sharp.

Across terrain, Hearthborn works naturally for sandstone, dry earth, weathered plaster, dust, pale rocks and ruins. Layer, stipple or carefully drybrush it over darker beige and brown foundations. On textured walls and rocks in particular, the pale warm colour quickly brings raised details into focus. Combine it with ochre, rusty brown and grime for dry, aged environments that retain plenty of visual warmth.

Hearthborn can also function as a general warm highlight colour. Mixing a small amount into brown, ochre, red or olive green can lighten the colour without immediately making it noticeably colder. This is useful when pure white would produce a chalky or overly stark result. Within a Volume 4-inspired palette, Hearthborn can therefore help carry several warm colour progressions towards their brightest stages.

Its main advantage is its gentle warmth: surfaces can become noticeably brighter without losing the earthy, weathered character that makes a grimdark palette so effective.
