Grove Hollow Shade is a dark olive-green Warpaints Fanatic Wash from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. wash originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4 and flows into recesses to give foliage, green skin, clothing, wood, leather, creatures and terrain deeper shadows, stronger contrast and a natural grimdark atmosphere.
What is Grove Hollow Shade? It is a fluid acrylic wash with a dark olive to forest-green character. Unlike a conventional opaque acrylic paint, a wash is designed to spread over an existing base colour and accumulate more strongly inside recessed detail. Folds, seams, textures and other depressions become darker while the underlying colour remains visible.
Grove Hollow Shade originally appeared as one of the two washes in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4, alongside eight conventional Fanatic acrylic colours. Volume 4 focuses on warm, earthy and intense colours for atmospheric miniature painting. This green wash adds a dark organic shadow to that palette, making it particularly useful for weathered, natural and gothic colour schemes.
The main advantage of Grove Hollow Shade is the ability to add depth and definition quickly without manually painting every individual shadow. Its fluid consistency encourages the colour to settle into lower areas and emphasise sculpted detail. It can be applied broadly across an entire component or placed more precisely with a smaller brush into selected folds, panel lines and recesses.
How do you use Grove Hollow Shade? Shake the bottle thoroughly first. Apply a controlled amount over a completely dry base colour and guide the wash towards the areas where you want the deepest shadows. Avoid allowing large pools to remain on flat surfaces. If unwanted accumulation develops, remove the excess with a clean, slightly damp brush before the wash starts to dry.
Over olive and natural greens, Grove Hollow Shade is particularly effective. Use it on military clothing, cloaks, goblin skin, creature skin, leaves and other vegetation. The wash deepens these colours without immediately producing the hard appearance of a black shadow. Once completely dry, reapply the original base colour to raised surfaces before developing lighter highlights.
A practical green workflow starts with an olive or mid-green base followed by Grove Hollow Shade across the whole area. Restore the base colour on the raised surfaces and then progress towards a lighter green. For brighter highlights, a yellow-green such as Gladeshard can be introduced at the end. This leaves the dark olive wash visible inside recesses while making raised details progressively easier to read.
For foliage and terrain, the wash is equally versatile. Allow Grove Hollow Shade to settle between leaves, moss, bark, roots and overgrown ruins to separate individual textures. Applied over brown or khaki, its green character can also suggest damp, mossy or organic staining. This is useful for woodland bases, decaying buildings, wooden structures and atmospheric fantasy scenery.
On leather, canvas and weathered equipment, Grove Hollow Shade can be applied more selectively. Thin green shadows around seams and lower areas can give materials an aged, dirty or damp appearance. A restrained application over metallic surfaces can suggest moss-like grime or organic discolouration. For convincing weathering, irregular placement is generally more effective than covering every surface with the same amount of green.
Grove Hollow Shade also works well across creatures and organic details. Scales, wrinkles, muscles, tentacles and chitin gain quick definition as the wash settles between raised structures. Combine it with olive, yellow-green, brown or pale flesh colours when painting swamp creatures, goblins, mutants and other fantasy or science-fiction subjects.
More experienced painters can use the wash for subtler toning as well. Controlled or diluted applications can make an existing surface locally greener and darker without completely repainting it. Several thin applications provide greater control than one heavy coat. Allow each layer to dry fully before adding another wash, glaze or highlight.
Because Grove Hollow Shade is green rather than neutral black or brown, it can also help unify mixed natural colours. A restrained wash across green cloth next to brown leather or earthy terrain introduces a shared olive cast. This is particularly useful for grimdark models where individual materials should remain recognisable while still feeling dirty, aged and connected to the same environment.
Grove Hollow Shade is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners can quickly increase contrast and make sculpted texture easier to read with one controlled wash. Experienced painters can use it selectively for recess shading, colour variation, organic staining and atmospheric weathering. Especially where black would look too harsh and brown too warm, this olive-green wash gives shadows a natural, dirty and atmospheric character.
