Sunburst Ochre is a deep, earthy ochre from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic sits between warm brown and yellow, making it ideal for leather, weathered cloth, skin, sand, terrain and as a dark foundation for warm yellow colour schemes.
What is Sunburst Ochre? It is a warm brown-yellow ochre developed in collaboration with John Blanche for his expressive, gritty and gothic painting style. The colour originally appeared in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 2 Paint Set. Sunburst Ochre has since gained a clear role within the wider Warpaints Fanatic colour system as an additional colour for the Yellows Flexible Colour Triad.
Sunburst Ochre is the seventh complementary colour in the Yellows Flexible Triad PLUS+. The standard Yellows Flexible Triad consists of Demigod Flames, Fiendish Yellow, Daemonic Yellow, Warped Yellow, Space Dust and Ice Yellow. Sunburst Ochre adds a much deeper and earthier starting point. This allows you to move from brownish shadows through yellow midtones and into increasingly bright highlights without beginning with a vivid yellow base.
Why use Sunburst Ochre? Yellow can be challenging when you want a dark, weathered or grimdark finish. A bright yellow foundation can quickly appear clean and highly saturated. Sunburst Ochre provides a deeper starting point with more earthiness and warmth. Shadows remain rich and natural, while the lighter Yellows in the Flexible Triad have plenty of room to build progressively stronger contrast.
How do you use Sunburst Ochre in a yellow colour scheme? Apply it as a dark base or shadow colour and leave it visible in seams, folds and recesses. Gradually introduce lighter Yellows towards surfaces receiving more light. For a quick tabletop workflow, larger jumps between colours work well. For smoother transitions, mix neighbouring shades or thin Sunburst Ochre significantly to create controlled transitional layers.
The colour is considerably more versatile than simply being a foundation for yellow. On leather, Sunburst Ochre immediately creates a warm, worn appearance. Paint bags, belts, boots, holsters and saddles with the ochre before deepening the shadows with dark brown. Progressively lighter ochre or sandy colours can then define worn edges. Small scratches and irregular highlights help smooth leather appear older and rougher.
Sunburst Ochre is equally useful for fabric. Weathered uniforms, cloaks, robes, tent cloth, banners and worn fantasy clothing all suit its earthy character. Combine it with brown shadows for a dirtier result, or progress towards yellow and ivory for sun-bleached highlights. The earthy foundation prevents these materials from becoming excessively bright, making it particularly useful for Blanchitsu-inspired combinations of muted surfaces and carefully placed strong accents.
On skin and organic materials, Sunburst Ochre can serve as a warm undertone or shadow colour. It can be incorporated into unhealthy fantasy skin, monsters, weathered faces or warm shadows beneath lighter flesh tones. This is a practical painting application rather than a fixed recipe: the amount of ochre left visible determines whether the finished result feels natural, unhealthy or deliberately stylised.
The colour is also highly practical for terrain and bases. Sunburst Ochre suits dry earth, sand, rocks, dust, weathered wood and desert environments. Apply it as a base colour before introducing lighter ochres, sandy colours or ivory through drybrushing or stippling. Dark brown washes can add deeper earth and accumulated dirt. Using the same colour on both miniature and base is also an effective way to visually connect the model to its environment.
Technically, Sunburst Ochre uses the Warpaints Fanatic formula with dense pigmentation suspended in a premium resin base with stabilisers. This provides strong coverage, smooth application and consistent pigment distribution. The paint can also be thinned extensively while retaining pigment dispersion. It therefore performs well for opaque basecoats as well as layering, blending and heavily thinned glaze-like applications.
Sunburst Ochre is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners gain a versatile earth colour that combines naturally with browns and yellows, while experienced painters can use it for warm underpainting, weathered materials and subtle colour transitions. As the dark complementary addition to the Yellows Flexible Triad PLUS+, this John Blanche colour is especially useful for giving yellow schemes more depth and a characterful, less pristine appearance.
