Product description

Tainted Garden is a dark, muted olive ochre from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic combines earthy ochre and olive tones, making it ideal for weathered armour, dirty cloth, leather, stone, ruins, terrain and other surfaces that need a decayed grimdark appearance.

What is Tainted Garden? It is an earthy, heavily muted colour that visually sits between olive green, ochre and brown. Tainted Garden was developed in collaboration with John Blanche and originally appeared in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 2 Paint Set. Its character fits naturally into grimdark painting, where dirt, wear, restrained colours and carefully placed contrasts help tell the story of a miniature.

Tainted Garden is also the John Blanche Masterclass addition to the Ochres & Tans Flexible Triad PLUS+. This family combines Tainted Garden with Tundra Taupe, Prairie Ochre, Desert Yellow, Wasteland Clay, Burnt Turf and Barren Dune. Together they provide a broad selection of muted earth colours that can progress from darker, dirtier tones towards lighter ochres, clays and sandy highlights.

Why use Tainted Garden? Its main strength is the balance between green and earth. A conventional brown can quickly become warm, while a traditional olive green may look distinctly military. Tainted Garden occupies the space between them. This allows it to sit naturally beside metallics, rust, leather, weathered cloth and dusty bases. It can function as a main colour or as a transition between dark olive shadows and lighter earthy tones.

How do you use Tainted Garden? Shake the bottle for approximately 30 seconds and check that the pigments are thoroughly mixed. Apply one or more thin coats. For a dark, weathered finish, start with Midnight Olive and place Tainted Garden across surfaces facing more towards the light. This combination is particularly effective for old armour and machinery because the transition from dark olive to muted ochre immediately suggests dust, age and heavy use.

On armour, Tainted Garden can function as either a base colour or a highlight. Leave darker colours visible around panel lines, seams and beneath raised surfaces. Apply Tainted Garden across larger illuminated areas and selected edges. Further highlights can be created with a lighter Ochres & Tans colour or by mixing Tainted Garden with Ivory White. Keep the brightest accents relatively small when you want to preserve a sombre grimdark appearance.

Weathering gives this colour even more character. Use a sponge or fine brush to create small chips with dark brown or Midnight Olive. Add a thin line of Tainted Garden beneath selected chips to suggest an edge catching the light. Rust, dust and metallic scratches can then be introduced locally. This creates a layered, damaged surface without requiring every armour panel to receive exactly the same treatment.

Tainted Garden is equally versatile on cloth and leather. Use it for worn uniforms, cloaks, canvas, bags, straps and battered equipment. Brown washes can push the colour towards a warmer and dirtier finish, while dark olive tones provide cooler shadows. Lighter ochres and sandy colours are useful for defining frayed edges, raised folds and areas that have been worn smooth.

For terrain and bases, Tainted Garden suits dry ground, scorched earth, weathered stone, rubble, sandbags, dead vegetation and decaying ruins. Stipple it irregularly over darker earth colours before drybrushing with a lighter tan. Its subtle green character can also give terrain an unhealthy, aged or polluted atmosphere without making the finished surface appear obviously green.

Technically, Tainted Garden uses the Warpaints Fanatic formula with dense pigmentation suspended in a premium resin base with stabilisers. This provides strong coverage and smooth application. The paint can also be thinned extensively while maintaining consistent pigment dispersion. Tainted Garden is therefore suitable for basecoating, layering, glazing, blending, stippling and controlled weathering techniques.
