Product description

Blanched Berry is a very dark, muted berry violet from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic forms the dark extension of the Desaturated Violets Flexible Triad PLUS+ and is ideal for deep violet shadows, weathered cloth, skin, organic details and sinister grimdark colour schemes.

What is Blanched Berry? It is a dark, heavily desaturated violet with a subtle reddish berry character. The colour was developed in collaboration with John Blanche and originally appeared in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 2 Paint Set. This makes it particularly well suited to the earthy, decayed and gothic atmosphere behind the Masterclass series: colour remains visible without the bright saturation of a conventional purple.

Blanched Berry is also included in the Desaturated Violets Flexible Triad PLUS+. Its seven colours are Blanched Berry, Mulled Berry, Moldy Wine, Elder Flower, Forbidden Fruit, Figgy Pink and Wilted Rose. Blanched Berry sits at the darkest end of this progression, adding an extra deep step before the lighter desaturated violets. This allows you to create dark shadows while retaining violet character instead of immediately reaching for neutral black.

Why use Blanched Berry? Dark violet is particularly useful for shadows because it contains more colour than black or dark grey. On a grimdark miniature, the deepest areas can therefore remain dark and threatening while still displaying a subtle purple undertone. This works naturally alongside flesh, reds, browns, dirty metallics and ochres. Blanched Berry can consequently function as either a primary colour or a supporting shadow colour.

How do you use Blanched Berry within the Desaturated Violets? Apply it as the dark foundation for an entirely violet surface or restrict it to the deepest shadows. Progress through Mulled Berry and the lighter colours in the family towards areas receiving more light. A quick tabletop workflow only needs a few colour steps. For smoother display transitions, mix neighbouring colours or apply thinned Blanched Berry in controlled layers.

The colour is particularly effective on cloth. Cloaks, robes, hoods, banners and weathered fabrics all benefit from its sombre violet character. Leave Blanched Berry visible in the deepest folds before gradually applying lighter colours to raised areas. Keeping the highlights muted preserves an aged, gothic appearance rather than turning the fabric into a clean and highly saturated purple.

Blanched Berry is also useful for skin and organic materials. When applied carefully in thin layers, a dark violet can add practical shadows around eyes, beneath cheekbones, between fingers or around damaged flesh. On monsters, mutants and corrupted creatures, the colour can remain much more visible. Pair it with pale flesh for an unhealthy contrast or combine it with reds and browns to suggest bruised, unnatural and weathered organic surfaces.

For supernatural subjects, Blanched Berry provides an atmospheric foundation for spectral creatures, enchanted relics and magical details. Begin with the dark berry violet before progressing towards lighter violets, pinks or Ivory White. Restricting the palest colour to small raised points creates strong contrast between an almost black violet foundation and an eerie pale glow.

The colour can also be used effectively on armour and terrain. Dark violet armour offers an alternative to black and develops subtle colour when highlighted with muted purples. Across ruins, strange plants, corrupted roots and fantasy terrain, Blanched Berry can separate supernatural or organic details from the conventional browns and greens normally used for earth and vegetation.

Technically, Blanched Berry uses the Warpaints Fanatic acrylic formula. Dense pigmentation is suspended in a premium resin base with stabilisers to provide strong coverage, smooth application and consistent pigment distribution. The formulation can also be thinned extensively while retaining pigment dispersion. This makes Blanched Berry suitable for opaque basecoating, layering, blending and heavily thinned glaze-like applications.
