Product description

Banshee Brown is a very dark, earthy brown from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic provides a strong foundation for leather, wood, fur, earth and weathered materials, giving grimdark miniatures deep brown shadows without immediately resorting to pure black.

What is Banshee Brown? It is a dark brown originally released in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1 Paint Set and now available as an individual Warpaints Fanatic acrylic. The colour was developed in collaboration with John Blanche and fits the expressive, gritty and gothic visual language associated with his work. The result is a practical earth tone for surfaces that should appear old, used and atmospheric.

Banshee Brown also has a clear function within the wider Warpaints Fanatic colour system. It has been added to the Ruddy Browns Flexible Triad PLUS+, where it works alongside Oak Brown, Tree Ancient, Dryad Brown, Fur Brown, Ruddy Umber and Buffed Hide. A standard Flexible Colour Triad consists of six related colours progressing from dark to light; Banshee Brown is the seventh John Blanche addition and extends the family's darker range. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

Why use Banshee Brown? Brown is one of the most versatile colours in miniature painting. A deep shade like this creates shadows that remain warmer and more natural than black. This is particularly useful for leather, wood, fur and earth. The underlying material continues to read as brown while leaving plenty of contrast for lighter colours and weathered details.

How do you use Banshee Brown? For leather, apply it as a dark foundation before introducing lighter Ruddy Browns on raised surfaces, folds and worn edges. Keep Banshee Brown visible around seams, beneath straps and between overlapping pieces. Small scratches painted with lighter browns quickly suggest worn leather. For reddish leather, thin red or warmer brown layers can also be applied over the dark foundation.

The same approach works particularly well on wood. Leave Banshee Brown visible in grain, joints and deep damage before building texture with lighter browns. Fine lines painted in the direction of the grain can add definition to rifle stocks, tool handles, crates, beams and wooden terrain. The Army Painter also uses Banshee Brown as a wood basecoat in an official painting workflow, making this a particularly natural application for the colour. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

For grimdark and Blanchitsu-inspired painting, Banshee Brown is also a useful weathering colour. Apply it sparingly with a small piece of sponge over lighter or coloured armour to suggest chips and exposed dark underlayers. A fine brush can add scratches, dirty edges and individual worn areas. Rust, metallics, ochres and lighter browns can then be introduced to create more variation across the surface.

Banshee Brown is equally at home on bases and terrain. Use it for earth, mud, tree bark, roots, rubble and dark wooden structures. A quick progression through Tree Ancient, Dryad Brown, Fur Brown or other lighter earth tones reveals texture and depth. Repeating some of the same browns on both the miniature and its base can also help create a coherent overall palette.

The paint uses the Warpaints Fanatic acrylic formulation with dense pigmentation, a premium resin base and stabilisers designed to maintain even pigment dispersion. Banshee Brown can therefore be used for solid basecoats or thinned for layering, glazing and controlled transitions. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

The main advantage of Banshee Brown is its versatility. The colour can function as a deep shadow, a material colour and a weathering tone. This makes it both a practical expansion of the Ruddy Browns family and a characterful John Blanche colour for fantasy, science-fiction, historical models, grimdark miniatures and terrain.
