Midnight Olive is a very dark, muted olive green from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic is the extra dark addition to the Olive Greens Flexible Triad PLUS+, making it ideal for deep green shadows, uniforms, camouflage, armour, creatures, vegetation and atmospheric grimdark miniatures.
What is Midnight Olive? It is an almost black olive green developed in collaboration with John Blanche specifically to extend the existing Olive Greens Flexible Colour Triad further into the shadows. It provides a green-tinted alternative to pure black, which can quickly neutralise the underlying olive character. This allows even the darkest areas of earthy, military and gothic colour schemes to retain visible colour.
Midnight Olive is the seventh complementary colour in the Olive Greens Flexible Triad PLUS+. The six regular colours in this family are Woodland Camo, Army Green, Camouflage Green, Olive Drab, Necrotic Flesh and Grotesque Green. Midnight Olive sits beyond them at the dark end, providing an additional starting point for progressing from deep olive shadows towards increasingly pale and desaturated green highlights.
Why use Midnight Olive? Very dark greens are particularly versatile because they can perform much of the visual role of black without becoming completely neutral. In the deepest folds of a uniform, between armour plates or beneath raised details, Midnight Olive creates strong shadows that still read as green. This makes it equally useful for realistic military subjects and fantasy or science-fiction miniatures with a dirtier, Blanchitsu-inspired appearance.
How do you use Midnight Olive within the Olive Greens triad? Start with Midnight Olive as your darkest base or reserve it for the deepest shadows. Progress towards Woodland Camo and the other Olive Greens on surfaces receiving more light. There is no need to use all seven colours on every miniature. Larger jumps work well for quick tabletop painting, while display painters can mix neighbouring colours to create softer transitions.
Uniforms and camouflage are natural applications. Midnight Olive works well on jackets, trousers, webbing, bags and military equipment where a dark green foundation is required. In camouflage patterns, use it as the darkest element alongside lighter olives, browns and sandy colours. Avoiding pure black helps the darkest areas remain visually connected to the rest of the natural colour palette.
On armour, Midnight Olive offers a restrained alternative to brighter greens. Use it on military vehicles, power armour, machinery or weathered fantasy equipment before building lighter olive colours towards edges and raised panels. For battle damage, paint small dark chips and add a fine lighter olive edge beneath selected marks. A touch of metallic paint inside the deepest scratches can suggest exposed material and heavier wear.
Midnight Olive is equally effective on creatures and organic surfaces. Dark reptilian skin, scales, orcs, insect-like carapaces and corrupted monsters can all benefit from its earthy green foundation. Progressively lighter Olive Greens can then be applied to muscles, scales and raised textures. The same workflow translates naturally to roots, moss, shrubs and other vegetation across miniature bases and scenery.
For a stronger grimdark effect, combine Midnight Olive with browns, ochres and rusty colours. Sunburst Ochre provides a warm contrast against the dark olive green, while Fiery Vermilion or Bloodmoon Red can create a small but powerful red focal point. Keeping these warm accents controlled allows Midnight Olive to remain dominant while creating strong visual contrast without losing the muted character of the miniature.
Technically, Midnight Olive uses the Warpaints Fanatic formula with dense pigmentation suspended in a premium resin base with stabilisers. It provides strong coverage and smooth application while also allowing extensive thinning without losing consistent pigment dispersion. This makes the paint suitable for opaque basecoats, layering, glazing and controlled shadow transitions.
Midnight Olive is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners gain a practical dark foundation that keeps green shadows readable, while experienced painters can use it for underpainting, blends, camouflage and atmospheric shading. As the darkest extension of the Olive Greens Flexible Triad PLUS+, Midnight Olive gives olive-green colour schemes additional depth, mood and a convincing grimdark character.
