Product description

Turnbull Turquoise is a muted blue-green Speedpaint from The Army Painter's John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. water-based acrylic creates a turquoise base colour, deeper recessed shading and lighter raised areas in one application over a light foundation, making it ideal for cloth, armour, equipment, creatures, patina and supernatural effects.

What is Turnbull Turquoise? It is a Speedpaint developed in collaboration with John Blanche and originally released as the unique Speedpaint in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 2 Paint Set. Its colour is a restrained turquoise sitting between blue and green. This makes it easy to combine with earthy browns, rust, dirty metallics and the other muted colours commonly associated with grimdark and Blanchitsu-inspired palettes.

Turnbull Turquoise is not a conventional opaque Warpaints Fanatic acrylic. The Speedpaint formula is specifically designed to flow across a light foundation. More colour naturally collects in folds, joints and recessed details while raised surfaces remain lighter. This creates a base colour, shading and a highlight effect within a single application. The effect is particularly useful on miniatures with plenty of sculpted texture.

How do you use Turnbull Turquoise? Shake the bottle thoroughly and preferably use a hard palette rather than a wet palette. Apply the Speedpaint generously but with control over a white, light beige or light grey primer. Allow the paint to move across the surface and flow naturally towards recessed details. Check broad flat surfaces for excess paint and remove unwanted pools with a clean, damp brush before they dry.

The foundation has a major influence on the finished colour. White provides the clearest and brightest turquoise result, while light grey or beige produces a slightly more restrained appearance. Zenithal and slapchop underpainting are also practical options. Bright raised surfaces remain lighter, while the darker pre-shading underneath continues to influence the final contrast through the Speedpaint. This allows substantial value variation to be created quickly with a single colour.

Turnbull Turquoise performs particularly well across textured surfaces such as cloaks, bags, straps, water bottles, robes, scales and organic skin. The flowing paint gathers naturally around these details, making folds and sculpted texture easy to read. For tabletop miniatures, one controlled application may provide all the basic definition required. Once dry, conventional acrylic paints can be used to sharpen edges, folds and focal highlights.

The colour is equally interesting for armour and science-fiction details. Apply Turnbull Turquoise to armour plates, energy elements, machinery, cables or decorative panels. Large smooth surfaces require more control than heavily textured areas. Work one panel at a time, maintain a wet edge and avoid repeatedly brushing over areas that have started to dry. This helps reduce streaks and unwanted pooling.

A particularly effective grimdark application is verdigris and patina. Turquoise creates a natural colour contrast against gold, copper and bronze. Apply Turnbull Turquoise selectively around rivets, joints, ornaments and damaged areas while allowing portions of the underlying metallic colour to remain visible. Brown or dark washes can then add further dirt and age. John Blanche-focused painting examples have also combined Turnbull Turquoise with yellow to create a greener verdigris-style wash.

For creatures and supernatural subjects, the colour works across scales, tentacles, ghosts, mutants and magical effects. A very light underpainting creates a more striking turquoise result, while a muted foundation produces a darker and more restrained appearance. Once dry, small highlights of pale turquoise, blue-green or Ivory White can make eyes, edges and energy points appear brighter.

Turnbull Turquoise therefore supports two distinct painting workflows. Beginners can quickly establish colour, shadow and definition without building several traditional acrylic layers. Experienced painters can combine the Speedpaint with zenithal priming, slapchop, controlled glazing, conventional highlights and weathering. In both cases, the colour and brightness of the underpainting remain an intentional part of the finished result.

Turnbull Turquoise is particularly useful when you want turquoise without creating an excessively clean or bright colour scheme. The result combines the speed of a one-coat painting workflow with the atmospheric colour contrast that suits the expressive, gritty and gothic character of the John Blanche Masterclass.
