Frostveil is a bright, cool blue from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic paint originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 3 and is designed for icy highlights, clothing, armour, heraldry, winter details and atmospheric supernatural effects.
What is Frostveil? It is a distinctly cool blue developed in collaboration with John Blanche. Volume 3 explores cold, mysterious and spectral colours, and Frostveil provides a strong blue foundation within this type of palette. It is bright enough to remain clearly visible among darker grimdark tones, yet can easily be integrated into a muted scheme through shading, glazing and weathering.
Frostveil is a conventional Warpaints Fanatic acrylic paint, rather than a Speedpaint, wash or effect paint. The Fanatic formulation uses dense pigmentation suspended in a premium resin base with stabilisers. This provides strong coverage and a consistent brush feel. The paint can also be thinned considerably while maintaining good pigment dispersion, allowing Frostveil to work both as an opaque colour and in controlled translucent layers.
How do you use Frostveil? Shake the bottle for approximately 30 seconds to mix the paint thoroughly. For a bright blue base, apply Frostveil in one or more thin layers over a primed surface. For a darker and more atmospheric result, begin with dark blue, blue-grey or an almost black colour and gradually restrict Frostveil to the raised and illuminated areas. This quickly creates a cold transition with useful depth.
On cloth, Frostveil works well for cloaks, robes, uniforms, sashes and other fabrics. Keep the deepest folds dark and apply Frostveil increasingly towards upward-facing or illuminated areas. For final highlights, mix in a small amount of Ivory White or another pale cool colour. This keeps the surface visibly blue while making sharp folds and edges easier to read from tabletop distance.
Frostveil is equally interesting for armour. Use it as a conventional blue base colour or stipple it over a darker foundation to create damaged, weathered surfaces. A practical grimdark workflow is to leave the dark undercoat visible in joints and damaged areas while applying Frostveil irregularly across the larger armour panels. Dark chips, grime and occasional metallic damage can then make the brighter blue appear older and more heavily worn.
The colour is also useful for cold and winter effects. Apply Frostveil to the shadowed areas of ice, snow, frost and frozen surfaces before progressing towards very pale blue or ivory on the sharpest edges. Across winter terrain, a heavily thinned application can introduce a subtle cold cast to stone, ruins or frozen ground without requiring the entire surface to become obviously blue.
Magic and supernatural miniatures provide another natural application. Frostveil works across energy fields, runes, spells, crystals, spectral flesh and glowing weapons. Begin with darker colours around the effect, progress through Frostveil and then move towards a much paler colour near the imaginary light source. For object source lighting, heavily thinned Frostveil can be glazed carefully onto nearby surfaces to suggest reflected blue light.
Frostveil also provides a useful colour for heraldry and focal details. A blue shield, banner or shoulder plate creates a clear cool contrast against red-browns, ochres, leather, rust and gold. This allows Frostveil to function as a focal colour within an otherwise earthy miniature. The contrast between a colder blue and dirty warm materials is particularly effective for John Blanche-inspired schemes where atmosphere comes from colour relationships rather than simply making every element dark.
Frostveil supports the Warpaints Fanatic Flexible Colour Triad System, allowing it to be combined with related darker and lighter blues for natural colour progression. You do not need to use every possible step. For tabletop miniatures, a dark foundation, Frostveil and one pale highlight can already create effective definition, while experienced painters can introduce additional intermediate tones and glazes for smoother blends.
Frostveil is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners get a strongly pigmented blue for quickly establishing clear colour areas and highlights. Experienced painters can thin the paint extensively for glazing, cold transitions and atmospheric effects. This makes Frostveil both a practical blue miniature paint and a characterful choice for the icy, mysterious atmosphere of John Blanche Masterclass Volume 3.
