Product description

Moonbeam Yellow is a rich, warm golden yellow from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic paint gives cloth, heraldry, armour and details a strong yellow accent that contrasts particularly well with the dark, earthy and weathered colours of grimdark miniatures.

What is Moonbeam Yellow? It is a warm yellow Warpaints Fanatic colour originally released in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1 Paint Set and now available as an individual acrylic paint. The colour has noticeably more warmth and golden character than a cool lemon yellow. This makes it bright enough to become a focal point while remaining easy to combine with browns, reds, dirty greens and other muted colours.

This character fits naturally into The Army Painter's collaboration with John Blanche. The Masterclass colours were created for expressive, gritty and gothic miniatures where atmosphere, texture and visual storytelling take priority. Blanche is particularly associated with imagery where dark, weathered areas are interrupted by carefully selected colour accents. Moonbeam Yellow is ideal for introducing such a warm focal point into an otherwise sombre palette.

Why use Moonbeam Yellow? Yellow naturally attracts attention and therefore creates an effective contrast against dark colours. On a grimdark miniature, however, you do not need to cover large surfaces with bright yellow. A yellow sleeve, shield marking, banner, cable, area around a lens or small heraldic detail can already be enough to guide the eye towards an important part of the model.

How do you use Moonbeam Yellow? A light, warm undercoat is generally useful when you want a strong yellow base colour. Apply Moonbeam Yellow in thin, even layers and allow each layer to dry before continuing. For deeper shadows, introduce brown, ochre, reddish brown or a darker warm yellow. For highlights, mix Moonbeam Yellow with a light warm colour such as Ivory White. This creates a progression from weathered golden yellow towards small bright highlights without suddenly making the colour appear cold.

Moonbeam Yellow becomes especially interesting for grimdark painting when the finished surface is allowed to look imperfect. Age yellow clothing with brown shadows and reserve the brighter colour for raised folds. On armour, add chips with dark brown or your underlying dark base colour, followed by tiny light scratches along selected lower edges. The yellow remains clearly visible while immediately gaining the worn appearance associated with John Blanche-inspired miniatures.

The colour also works particularly well for heraldry, tabards, banners, hazard markings and fantasy symbols. Combined with black, it produces a powerful industrial contrast, while Bloodmoon Red or other warm reds create a richer and more organic palette. Against green-blue, dark grey or The Darkness, Moonbeam Yellow becomes a distinct focal point. This makes it useful when working with only a few carefully controlled saturated accents.

Moonbeam Yellow can also serve as a useful intermediate colour for painted light sources. Lanterns, candlelight, magical illumination and glowing details can progress from dark orange or brown through Moonbeam Yellow towards a final Ivory White highlight at the hottest point. Thin the paint further when creating the surrounding glow and build the effect gradually with multiple translucent layers. This allows you to create a convincing yellow transition without turning the entire illuminated surface into a single bright colour.

The paint uses The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic acrylic formulation. The manufacturer describes the range as densely pigmented, using a premium resin base and stabilisers that help maintain even pigment dispersion. The paint can therefore be applied for solid coverage or thinned considerably for techniques such as layering, glazing and blending. Moonbeam Yellow is also part of the Flexible Colour Triad System, which organises related colours into logical dark-to-light progressions.

Moonbeam Yellow is suitable for both beginners and advanced miniature painters. Beginners get a recognisable warm yellow for clear accents and larger colour areas. Experienced painters can use it for controlled focal points, weathered yellow surfaces, warm colour mixtures and atmospheric lighting effects.

The key advantage of Moonbeam Yellow is its combination of brightness and warmth. It can stand out strongly against a dark grimdark palette while feeling less clinical than a cool, brilliant yellow. This makes the John Blanche colour a characterful choice for Blanchitsu-inspired projects as well as a versatile yellow for fantasy, science-fiction, historical miniatures and terrain.
