Product description

Emperor Gold is a rich, warm gold metallic from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. metallic acrylic combines strong coverage with a distinctive metallic sheen, making it ideal for weathered armour, weapons, ornaments, relics, trim and carefully placed grimdark gold accents.

What is Emperor Gold? It is a Warpaints Fanatic Metallic originally released in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1 Paint Set and now available individually. The colour was developed as part of the collaboration with John Blanche for expressive, gritty and gothic miniatures. Rather than an extremely bright yellow gold, Emperor Gold has a rich, warm character that combines naturally with dark shadows, browns and weathered surfaces.

The metallic formulation is technically different from a conventional Warpaints Fanatic acrylic colour. The Army Painter uses a specialised combination of aluminium flake and mica in its Fanatic Metallics. These particles reflect light while providing both coverage and metallic sheen. This is particularly useful with gold, as metallic gold paints can traditionally require several coats before the underlying surface is properly covered.

Why use Emperor Gold? Gold naturally attracts attention, making it an effective focal colour on a miniature. Within a grimdark colour scheme, it often works particularly well when applied selectively. A breastplate, insignia, weapon detail, crown, relic or a few pieces of decorative trim may be enough to make a dark miniature visually more interesting. Its warm gold character also contrasts effectively with black, grey, green and brown areas.

How do you use Emperor Gold? Shake the bottle thoroughly to distribute the metallic particles evenly through the paint. Apply one or more thin coats with a brush. For a deeper finish, paint Emperor Gold over a dark brown, black or dark metallic foundation. For brighter gold, reinforce the most exposed areas with another layer of Emperor Gold before adding a lighter gold or silver to selected highlights.

For a weathered John Blanche-inspired finish, a wash is a natural next step. A warm brown wash deepens the gold and can create an aged appearance, while Grimdark Shadow produces darker, dirtier recesses. Allow the wash to remain around rivets, engravings, joints and ornaments, then restore Emperor Gold across the raised surfaces. This keeps the metallic reflection visible while establishing much stronger shadows.

On armour, Emperor Gold can function as either a primary colour or a controlled accent. For predominantly gold armour, starting over a dark foundation immediately creates additional depth. Build the gold with thin layers while leaving some of the dark base visible around joints and damage. For smaller ornaments, use the paint as a deliberate focal detail on eagles, skulls, buckles, weapon decorations, trim and ceremonial elements.

Emperor Gold is equally useful for fantasy miniatures and terrain. Apply it to treasure chests, statues, altars, temple decorations, ornate weapons, crowns and magical objects. On historical or steampunk models, it can support brass-like and gilded details when combined with brown washes and darker weathering. The same gold can therefore appear polished or centuries old depending on the surrounding colours and finishing techniques.

An important advantage of Warpaints Fanatic Metallics is that the metallic colours can be mixed with one another. This allows Emperor Gold to be adjusted for a particular project. Mix it with a lighter metallic for brighter highlights or introduce a darker metallic for deeper transitions. A small amount of bright silver can be used on the strongest points of reflected light. Keeping these highlights restricted to sharp edges and exposed points helps preserve the rich gold appearance.

Emperor Gold works particularly well within the earthy palette of John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1. Pair it with Banshee Brown for warm surrounding materials, Ironclad Grey for dark armour and Grimdark Shadow for deep, dirty shading. Small Bloodmoon Red accents can strengthen the overall warmth further. This helps the gold become part of the miniature's colour story rather than simply appearing as an isolated shiny detail.
