Product description

Ivory White is a warm, creamy off-white from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic paint is ideal for soft highlights, bone, parchment, pale fabrics and skin whenever a bright pure white would look too harsh or sterile.

What is Ivory White? This John Blanche Masterclass colour is a light ivory with a subtle warm, creamy undertone. Ivory White originally appeared in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 1 Paint Set and is now also available individually. This lets you replenish a particularly useful highlight colour without needing another complete set.

The collaboration between The Army Painter and John Blanche focuses on expressive, gritty and gothic miniatures where mood, texture and visual storytelling are essential. Ivory White has an important role within such a palette. Grimdark painting is not simply about making everything dark: carefully placed light areas determine where the viewer's eye is drawn. A warm ivory creates that contrast without suddenly disrupting the muted and weathered appearance of the miniature.

Why use Ivory White instead of pure white? A clean white can appear extremely bright and cool beside earthy browns, rust, dirty reds and muted greens. Ivory White gives you a softer light value. This makes it particularly useful for final highlights on faces, clothing, leather and worn materials. Even the brightest areas can therefore remain connected to the atmospheric colour palette of a grimdark miniature.

How do you use Ivory White? For a straightforward workflow, establish your base colours and midtones first, then apply Ivory White sparingly to the areas catching the strongest light. On a face this could include the cheekbones and brow. On cloth, concentrate it on raised folds and worn edges, while armour can receive small highlights on its sharpest details. For smoother transitions, thin the paint and build the highlight gradually with several controlled layers.

Ivory White is especially useful for bone, skulls, teeth and horns. Start with a brown or beige base, retain the darker colour in recesses and progressively build lighter layers towards Ivory White. The same method works for old parchment and book pages. A brown shade can establish age and grime before Ivory White is used to bring definition back to raised areas and worn edges.

It is also valuable as a mixing colour. Add a small amount of Ivory White to reds, ochres, greens, browns or flesh tones to create lighter variations that can appear more natural than mixing the same colour with pure white. This is particularly useful for volumetric highlights and weathered surfaces. The warmer transition helps you maintain colour character while increasing contrast without making the final highlights appear overly chalky or clinical.

For faces, Ivory White can be mixed into an existing skin colour or reserved for the smallest final points of light. On fabrics it works particularly well for linen, robes, bandages and worn cloth. Terrain painters can use it on aged stone, weathered ornaments, skulls, relief details and dry, dusty surfaces. This makes Ivory White considerably more versatile than simply being a substitute for standard white.

Ivory White uses The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic acrylic formulation. The range combines dense pigmentation with a premium resin base and stabilisers designed to maintain pigment dispersion. This allows the paint to be thinned considerably while retaining an even distribution of pigment, making it useful for opaque highlights as well as thin layering, glazing and controlled colour mixing. Fanatic paints also use the Flexible Colour Triad System, allowing related colours to be combined into logical dark-to-light progressions.

Ivory White is suitable for both beginners and advanced painters. Beginners get a versatile light colour that makes natural-looking highlights easier to build. Experienced painters can use it for subtle mixtures, controlled light placement and adjusting other colours. Its warm character is especially effective for grimdark and Blanchitsu-inspired projects where a brilliant neutral white can easily feel out of place.

The key advantage of Ivory White is its balance between brightness and atmosphere. It allows you to create clearly visible highlights without immediately reaching for pure white. This makes the John Blanche colour an excellent fit for weathered fantasy and science-fiction miniatures, while remaining equally useful for historical models, scenery and any painting style that benefits from a warm, natural highlight.
