Rootpath is a dark, muted khaki brown from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4 and is particularly useful for earth, mud, roots, weathered wood, leather, canvas, equipment and natural grimdark terrain.
What is Rootpath? Rootpath is an earthy brown with noticeable khaki and olive nuances. The colour evokes forest soil, dusty tracks and aged natural materials. It is less red than a traditional warm brown and less distinctly green than a true olive. This makes Rootpath a versatile transition between brown, khaki and subdued green.
Rootpath originally appeared in John Blanche Masterclass Volume 4. This volume brings together warm and earthy colours developed in collaboration with John Blanche to support depth, atmosphere and visual storytelling. Rootpath fits naturally into that approach: its subdued character can connect large areas of a miniature or scene without competing with brighter focal colours.
Rootpath is a conventional Warpaints Fanatic acrylic paint, rather than a wash, Speedpaint, metallic or effect paint. The Fanatic formulation uses dense pigmentation in a premium resin base with stabilisers for smooth application and consistent brush control. It can be thinned significantly while maintaining good pigment dispersion. This allows Rootpath to work as an opaque colour as well as for layering, glazing, blending and controlled weathering.
How do you use Rootpath? Shake the bottle thoroughly and build the colour with thin layers. On natural surfaces, Rootpath can work directly as either a base colour or midtone. Use dark brown, black-brown or deep olive in recessed shadows before returning to Rootpath across raised areas. Lighter khaki, sand, ochre or beige can then create highlights, producing a soft earthy progression without harsh colour jumps.
For earth, mud and scenic bases, Rootpath is particularly practical. Use it for forest floors, muddy tracks, trenches, rocky ground and dirty ruins. Apply different browns irregularly and stipple Rootpath across raised areas. A lighter sand or khaki colour can then be drybrushed over the texture. Introducing occasional green, grey or dark brown patches prevents the ground from becoming one uniform surface.
Roots, tree bark and weathered wood also suit this colour well. Begin with a dark brown foundation and apply Rootpath to grain, ridges and raised textures. For old, dry wood, gradually introduce lighter grey-brown or beige highlights. Thin green glazes around the bottom of roots or timber can suggest dampness and moss, while a darker wash can restore definition inside the deepest texture.
For leather and equipment, Rootpath creates a restrained, well-used appearance. Belts, bags, boots, holsters, saddles and scabbards can progress from a dark brown shadow into Rootpath. Restrict lighter khaki or beige to edges and areas of wear to suggest aged leather. Because Rootpath is relatively subdued, it combines easily with metallics, fabrics and stronger faction colours.
Its khaki-brown character is equally suitable for canvas, tent cloth, cloaks, uniforms and military equipment. Start with a darker olive-brown shadow, use Rootpath across the midtones and introduce a lighter khaki on raised folds. This progression gives fabric a dusty, weathered quality that works across fantasy, historical, post-apocalyptic and science-fiction miniatures.
Rootpath is also useful for weathering. Stipple small amounts around the lower areas of vehicles, boots, cloaks and machinery to suggest dried earth and accumulated dirt. Thin the paint for controlled dust and grime glazes, or combine several earth tones to create irregular staining. Concentrating these effects around logical contact points, seams and lower surfaces helps the weathering remain convincing.
Within a grimdark palette, Rootpath combines naturally with other earthy and weathered colours. Thicket Grove introduces a greener contrast for vegetation and military materials, while Umberroot provides deeper warm browns. Warm ochres and beige make natural highlight colours. Small accents of bright red, yellow or magenta can then stand out clearly against Rootpath's restrained background.
Rootpath is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Beginners get a versatile earth colour that quickly creates cohesion across bases, leather and scenery. Experienced painters can use Rootpath for subtle glazes, texture, dirt and natural colour transitions. Its main advantage is its subdued character: Rootpath creates convincing natural surfaces while providing a calm foundation against which brighter grimdark accents can remain clearly visible.
