Product description

Fiery Vermilion is an intense, warm vermilion red from The Army Painter's Warpaints Fanatic John Blanche Masterclass range. This 18ml. acrylic combines strong pigmentation and coverage with a fiery red character that works particularly well for cloth, armour, heraldry, red highlights and striking accents within dark grimdark colour schemes.

What is Fiery Vermilion? Vermilion is a warm red that visually moves towards red-orange. Fiery Vermilion uses this character to create a vivid, fiery colour that appears noticeably warmer than a cool or dark crimson. The colour was developed in collaboration with John Blanche and originally appeared as one of the six Warpaints Fanatic acrylic colours in the John Blanche Masterclass Volume 2 Paint Set.

The colour fits naturally into the earthy, high-contrast character of the first two John Blanche Masterclass volumes. Fiery Vermilion is particularly effective as a warm focal colour among muted browns, olive greens, ochres, dirty metallics and deep shadows. It does not need to cover a large part of the model: a red hood, shield, banner, weapon detail or a few markings can be enough to direct attention towards an important area of the miniature.

Why use Fiery Vermilion? Its combination of warmth and saturation makes the colour suitable for both basecoating and highlighting. Over darker red surfaces, Fiery Vermilion can make raised areas warmer and brighter. Used as the main base colour, it gives cloth, cloaks, armour panels and heraldry a strong red identity that can then be developed further with washes, dark red-browns and brighter accents.

How do you use Fiery Vermilion? Shake the bottle for approximately 30 seconds and check that the paint is thoroughly mixed. Apply several thin coats rather than one heavy layer. For a deep red progression, begin with a dark red or red-brown and gradually introduce Fiery Vermilion to areas that receive more light. Leave the darkest foundation visible in seams and recesses to preserve immediate contrast.

On red cloth, Fiery Vermilion works particularly well for cloaks, robes, banners and fabric details. Concentrate the colour on upper folds and surfaces facing the light. A lighter red-orange can then be added to the sharpest folds. For a more weathered grimdark appearance, keep these highlights smaller and retain dark brown or green-black shadows in the deepest folds.

On armour, Fiery Vermilion can be used across complete plates or for smaller markings. Combine it with dark painted chips to suggest worn and damaged surfaces. A small dark brown scratch with a fine brighter red line beneath it can create the impression of a chipped edge catching the light. Metallic paint can then be reserved for the deepest damage when you want to suggest exposed material beneath the painted surface.

Fiery Vermilion is also useful for flames, glowing details and warm lighting effects. It can form the red outer area of a flame before progressing through orange towards yellow and a very pale centre. For Object Source Lighting, thin the colour and apply it carefully around the light source. The Warpaints Fanatic formulation can be thinned extensively while maintaining pigment dispersion, making glazing and controlled colour transitions practical options.

The technical foundation of Fiery Vermilion is the Warpaints Fanatic acrylic formula. It uses dense pigmentation in a premium resin base with stabilisers designed for smooth application and consistent pigment dispersion. This makes the paint suitable for solid basecoats, controlled layering, edge highlights and heavily thinned applications. Beginners gain an approachable red acrylic, while advanced painters can use the same colour for glazing, blends and expressive contrast.

Fiery Vermilion also participates in the wider Flexible Colour Triad System used throughout Warpaints Fanatic. This system organises related colours around a common root colour, making it easier to create logical progressions from darker to lighter values. Fiery Vermilion can therefore be incorporated naturally into a layered painting workflow without restricting the colour to one particular technique.

Fiery Vermilion is suitable for beginners and advanced miniature painters alike. Its main advantage is its ability to introduce warmth and visual energy into a model.
