Product description

Vallejo Squidmar Color Squid Orange 74211 is acrylic paint for miniatures and model making in an 18ml jar. The bright orange shade can be used for warm orange accents and flame details.

This color is part of the 48 acrylic colors from Squidmar Color. Vallejo developed the range together with Emil Nyström and Lukas Holmström of Squidmar Miniatures. The guiding principle is a clear palette with colors that complement each other. The acrylic paints are intended for opaque base colors, shadows, highlights, transitions, and transparent layers. This allows you to work on different parts of a miniature within the same range.

How do you use this miniature paint? Shake the paint jar well and place a small amount on your palette. Start with a test area on a primed miniature. Adjust the dilution to the chosen technique and apply controlled thin layers rather than one thick layer. Let each layer dry before continuing. This way, small details remain visible and you can build up the color gradually.

For a smooth transition, first mix an intermediate color on the palette. Place it between your base and the lighter or darker color. Then reduce the area on which you apply each subsequent layer. On a face, buckle, or cloak, this principle works the same way, but the size of the steps differs. Regularly look at the thumbnail from a distance to check if the volume is still legible.

Use the color to build up a warm accent on clothing or a painted fire effect. For fabric, follow the shape of the folds and keep the darkest zones small enough to keep the color recognizable. For flames, first determine the bright center and build the warmer surroundings around it. This inverted light distribution requires a different approach than for a regular garment.

Do you want to subtly shift the tint? Then make a small test mix first. Add the second color bit by bit so you can see how the brightness and color temperature change. Note down usable ratios when you want to paint multiple figures in the same style. The color system was developed for cohesive mixes, but you choose the final ratio based on your subject, background, and desired contrast.

A glaze is a thin, transparent layer of color used to adjust a transition or color impression. Use little paint on the brush and distribute the layer without leaving puddles. Build up the effect in small steps. For sharp edge accents, use a controlled brush tip and less thinning. Both techniques can be done with the same color, while their function on the miniature is very different.

The paint is suitable for beginners who want to learn basic colors and highlights, and for advanced users who compose their palette more consciously. Wargaming miniatures, role-playing characters, and display figures all offer scope for this approach. A brightly chosen color on a small part can attract more attention than many different colors spread across the entire model. Therefore, decide in advance where you want to place the strongest contrast.

A possible color combination is Squidmar Color Goldcoin Yellow 74210 with Squidmar Color Tetanus Orange 74212. Place the three shades side by side on your palette and choose what role Squid Orange will play in your project. First, make small intermediate mixes so that you can compare the steps. This is a painting proposal: you determine the desired ratio yourself. Deliberately keep the darkest areas and the lightest accents separate when you want to build strong contrasts.

If you are working on multiple figures, start with a single prototype on which you develop warm orange accents and flame details. Determine where you will use Squid Orange directly and where you will choose a blend or transparent layer. Compare the result under the same lighting before repeating the approach. For a display figure, however, you can take more time for the transitions and reduce the accents to the points that best define the shape.

Use a suitable tool for thinning or another effect and test the combination beforehand. Follow the instructions on the product label. Keep your palette and brush well-maintained so that dried paint and previously mixed colors do not unintentionally alter the result. Evaluate a new layer only after drying and work step by step towards the contrast that suits your miniature and chosen painting style.
