Primer for miniatures is an essential first step in miniature painting and scale modelling. A good primer helps paint adhere to plastic, resin or metal models and creates a smooth base layer for further painting. In this category at Scenery Workshop you will find different types of primer from brands such as Citadel and Tamiya, including spray primers and fine modelling primers designed specifically for miniatures and scale models.

What is primer for miniatures?

Primer is a preparatory paint layer that is applied before painting a model. It improves paint adhesion and helps prevent paint from chipping or rubbing off during handling or gameplay.

Primers for miniatures are formulated to create thin and even coats that preserve small sculpted details. This ensures that armour lines, textures and fine details remain visible after priming.

Why hobbyists use primer

Miniature painters use primer because it significantly improves the painting process and final results. Without primer, paint may struggle to stick to smooth plastic or metal surfaces.

Primer is commonly used for:

  • Preparing plastic, resin and metal miniatures
  • Improving paint adhesion
  • Creating a smooth painting surface
  • Protecting the model from paint wear
  • Speeding up painting by providing a coloured base

At Scenery Workshop many hobbyists apply primer before continuing with basecoats, washes and highlighting techniques.

How to use primer for miniatures or scale models

For best results start with clean and dry miniatures. Dust, grease or mould release agents can reduce primer adhesion.

When using a spray primer, shake the can thoroughly and apply several thin coats from a distance of around 20 to 30 centimetres. Thin coats prevent loss of surface detail.

Once the primer has dried it creates a slightly matte surface that helps acrylic paints adhere more effectively. After priming you can begin applying base colours and further painting techniques.

What to consider when choosing primer

When selecting a primer the colour can influence the final appearance of the paint job.

  • Black primers for strong shadows and darker schemes
  • White primers for bright colour schemes
  • Grey primers for neutral painting surfaces

The choice often depends on the miniature, colour scheme and painting method. At Scenery Workshop you can easily find the right primer for your miniature painting or modelling projects.

Frequently asked questions about primer

Why is primer important for miniatures?

Primer helps paint adhere to the model surface and reduces the risk of paint chipping or rubbing off.

Can you paint miniatures without primer?

It is possible, but paint may not stick well and may wear off more easily.

Which primer colour should I choose?

Black works well for darker schemes, white for brighter colours and grey for a balanced neutral base.

Is spray primer better than brush-on primer?

Spray primers usually produce smoother coats, while brush primers are useful for small projects or indoor use.

Why buy primer from Scenery Workshop?

Scenery Workshop offers primers from well-known modelling brands designed specifically for miniatures, terrain and scale models.
