Product description

Vallejo Squidmar Color Metallic Dragon Gold 74252 is metallic paint for miniatures and scale models, supplied in an 18ml. bottle. Use its bright gold metallic hue for gold ornaments and decorated armour.

Squidmar Color Metallic comprises seven metallic paints developed within Vallejo’s collaboration with Emil Nyström and Lukas Holmström. Vallejo describes fine particles, good coverage and a defined metallic finish. You can use the paints individually, mix them with each other, or combine them with acrylic colours and inks to adjust hue, shadows and reflections. This makes the selection useful for a variety of miniature metal surfaces.

How do you paint with metallics? Shake the bottle thoroughly, place a small amount on a separate area of your palette and begin with a test patch on a primed surface. Apply controlled coats and let them dry. Judge the colour under your usual painting light. Reflective particles respond to the direction of illumination, so turning the miniature may change the appearance of an individual panel or ornament.

Start by defining the metal areas. Paint seams, edges and contact points carefully so that metal remains distinct from adjacent cloth or skin. A buckle does not need to cover a large area to attract attention. A neat base coat, a dark contact line and a focused light accent can give even tiny sculpted details a convincing place within the miniature’s wider colour scheme.

Use gold on decorated armour, ornaments or a small emblem intended to attract attention. Keep its contact with surrounding areas precise so the metallic detail retains a clear shape. On a larger ornament, make deeper areas warmer or darker and brighten selected edges. Choose those accents deliberately, since many equally strong reflections can make an intricate decoration harder to read.

For greater depth, consider a darker metallic in less illuminated areas and a lighter shade on projecting edges. Test the mixture on your palette before combining two metallic paints on the model. Look at both its colour and the strength of the metallic effect. Repeat useful proportions across several parts when painting a unit with matching weapons, armour or decorative details.

A transparent ink can change the colour impression of a metal surface. Test a thin layer on a separate patch and build the result gradually. This approach can suggest warmer, cooler or more strongly coloured metal. Preserve the main bright accents and avoid making every recess equally dark. Variation between lighter and darker zones helps the sculpted shape remain legible under different viewing angles.

The paint suits beginners seeking genuinely reflective metallic colours and experienced painters exploring tinted metals and controlled reflections. Non-metallic metal, or NMM, creates the illusion of shine using ordinary colours. With this metallic paint, part of the reflection comes from the paint itself. You can still add painted shadows and selective highlights to guide how the final surface reads on your miniature.

A possible palette pairs this colour with Squidmar Color Demon Gold 74253 and Squidmar Color Ungodly Copper 74255. Place the three hues beside each other on your palette and decide which role Dragon Gold should play in your project. Make small intermediate mixes so you can compare the steps. This is a painting suggestion, with the final proportions left to your own judgement. Preserve distinct dark areas and bright accents when developing a strong contrast scheme.

When painting several figures, start with one test model and develop gold ornaments and decorated armour before repeating the method. Record where you use Dragon Gold directly and where you choose a mixture or transparent layer instead. Compare the result under consistent lighting. For a display figure, spend additional time refining the transitions and reduce the brightest accents to the points that best explain the sculpted form.

Use a suitable auxiliary product when adjusting dilution or exploring a different effect, and test the combination first. Follow the instructions on the product label. Keep your palette and brush in good condition so that dried paint and previous mixing colours do not alter the result unexpectedly. Judge a new layer after it has dried and work gradually towards the contrast that suits your miniature and painting style.
