Product description

Vallejo Squidmar Color Fire Ink 74262 is ink for miniatures and scale models, supplied in an 18ml. bottle. Use its red-orange ink hue for warm filters and fiery colour variations.

This colour belongs to the twelve inks in Squidmar Color, developed by Vallejo with Emil Nyström and Lukas Holmström. Vallejo describes high saturation and even application. The inks support colour enrichment, transparent filters, chromatic shadows, tinted metallics and richer transitions. They let you adjust an existing paint job while keeping the underlying variation relevant, rather than rebuilding every previous layer with a new opaque colour.

What does an ink do on a miniature? A transparent colour layer changes the hue of the paint below it while that base still influences the finished result. Test a small area using the same undercoat as your model. A light base and a dark base can produce very different impressions with the same ink. Choose the layering approach according to the effect you want on your particular figure.

Shake the bottle and dispense a small amount onto your palette. Test dilution and load a modest amount onto the brush. Apply the layer deliberately, avoiding pools along edges or in deep details when aiming for an even filter. Allow it to dry before judging the result. You can then decide whether another layer is needed or whether the existing colour has already gained enough intensity.

A warm filter can bring greater coherence to a yellow, orange or red detail. Work selectively on the intended colour zones and preserve cooler parts when you want contrast. On metallics, use the same ink to explore a warm tint. Test a patch first and assess it after drying, choosing the filter strength according to the material you want to suggest.

For chromatic shadows, place the ink selectively in less illuminated areas. The aim is to give those zones a different colour impression while preserving readable highlights. Work on small surfaces and control the transition. Ink can be useful in faster painting methods, but the position of the layer still matters. It provides a tool for your decisions about shadows rather than determining their placement automatically.

To tint metallics, make a test patch with your chosen metallic paint and apply a thin ink layer over it. Observe how much reflection remains and how strongly the hue changes. Build slowly when seeking subtle coloured metal. For a bolder fantasy effect, strengthen the filter while preserving a few bright edges. Those accents help the shape of the metal detail remain convincing within the wider miniature.

The ink suits beginners learning transparent colour effects and experienced painters controlling colour temperature and depth. Use it on wargaming miniatures, role-playing characters or display figures. Begin with a clearly defined part before filtering an entire model. This makes it easier to see how the hue relates to your existing palette and where a selective application brings more benefit than a uniform layer over everything.

A possible palette pairs this colour with Squidmar Color Squid Orange 74211 and Squidmar Color Deadliest Red 74213. Place the three hues beside each other on your palette and decide which role Fire Ink should play in your project. Make small intermediate mixes so you can compare the steps. This is a painting suggestion, with the final proportions left to your own judgement. Preserve distinct dark areas and bright accents when developing a strong contrast scheme.

When painting several figures, start with one test model and develop warm filters and fiery colour variations before repeating the method. Record where you use Fire Ink directly and where you choose a mixture or transparent layer instead. Compare the result under consistent lighting. For a display figure, spend additional time refining the transitions and reduce the brightest accents to the points that best explain the sculpted form.

Use a suitable auxiliary product when adjusting dilution or exploring a different effect, and test the combination first. Follow the instructions on the product label. Keep your palette and brush in good condition so that dried paint and previous mixing colours do not alter the result unexpectedly. Judge a new layer after it has dried and work gradually towards the contrast that suits your miniature and painting style.
