Why use scratching brushes for weathering? On vehicles, armour plates, machinery and other painted surfaces, wear rarely appears as perfectly shaped marks. Paint tends to chip around edges, frequently handled areas and surfaces exposed to mechanical wear. Scratchline brushes help recreate this kind of irregular damage while still giving you control over where the effect appears.
One of their main applications is chipping with chipping medium or chipping fluid. Start by applying the underlying colour, such as metal, rust or a darker primer shade. Apply the chipping product and then paint the final top colour over it. Once the layer is ready for weathering, slightly moisten the surface and use a Scratchline brush to disturb and remove selected areas of the top coat. The underlying colour then becomes visible as realistic scratches and chipped paint.
How do you use these brushes with the hairspray technique? The process is similar to working with dedicated chipping fluids. Apply and dry the underlying colour first, followed by a thin layer of hairspray or a comparable product. Paint the final colour over this layer. Once ready, carefully moisten the surface and use the Scratchline brush to remove parts of the upper paint layer. Changing the pressure, movement and brush size allows you to create anything from fine scratches to larger areas of wear.
The four different sizes provide additional control over the scale of the effect. The smaller sizes 0 and 1 are useful for localised damage, smaller panels, fine scratches and controlled wear around details. The larger sizes 4 and 6 are better suited to broader surfaces and larger irregular wear patterns. Combining different sizes helps prevent the weathering from looking repetitive.
The Scratchline PC1 brushes can also be used for applying and weathering winter camouflage. Temporary white winter finishes often look most convincing when parts of the white layer have worn away to reveal the original colour beneath. By combining a white camouflage coat with a suitable chipping technique, these brushes allow you to remove the upper layer selectively and create convincing worn winter camouflage.
For miniature wargamers, the brushes are particularly useful on tanks, mechs, armour panels, industrial scenery, weapons and other models where surface wear adds visual storytelling. Historical scale modellers can use them on military vehicles, machinery and equipment, while science-fiction models benefit from scratches and chipped paint around panels, access points and exposed edges.
How do you create convincing scratches and scuffs? Work gradually with several light passes rather than trying to create the full effect in one aggressive movement. Concentrate wear on logical areas such as edges, access panels, handles, walkways and raised sections. Vary the direction and size of the damage. A combination of small scratches and occasional larger chips usually looks more natural than an evenly distributed pattern.
The set is suitable for both beginners and experienced miniature painters and scale modellers. Beginners can experiment with the four brush sizes to learn how moisture, pressure and movement influence the result. Advanced hobbyists can combine the brushes with layered chipping, rust effects, filters, washes and pigments to build more complex weathering.
Clean the brushes after use, particularly when working with paint, chipping fluids or other weathering products. Remove residue before it dries completely and allow the brushes to dry properly afterwards. Because these brushes are intentionally used for scratching and weathering effects, they do not need to maintain the same fine point as a conventional detail painting brush.
