'Retarders' (retarders) are used to counteract the quick-drying properties of acrylic paint.
This makes it possible to apply wet-on-wet, or other techniques that are otherwise only possible when you use oil paint.
With correct use, the medium can keep the paint wet for an extra long time (from half an hour to a full working day).
